Source: Edinburgh Evening News Comment Direction of travel THE future of airports in Scotland is not a city issue, but a national issue. The days of Glasgow versus Edinburgh have to be over and the economy, industry, tourism and travel are one intertwined Central Belt issue. Many people in the United States or Europe or indeed anywhere else in the world would find it incredible that the two major cities of a small peripheral European country only 40 miles apart were squabbling over who should get government funds for the biggest airport. The key to the success of Scotland in the future lies in transport _link_s in the Central Belt, and there has to be an integrated policy. Yesterday’s announcement by Secretary of State for Transport and Scotland, Alistair Darling, that when new capacity is needed for air travel in Scotland Edinburgh airport will get a second runway, is a logical step. Edinburgh airport is growing faster that Glasgow, but the overwhelming fact is that geography is on its side. Edinburgh airport is on the right side of the city for Glasgow. Once rail _link_s and road _link_s are of the standard they should be Glasgow city centre will be within a 40-minute transfer. Compare that to Heathrow to central London by tube. Glasgow airport is on the far side of the city for the Central Belt; travelling through city centres causes delays and improving capacity and frequency is often difficult and expensive. To safeguard Scotland’s future we need to ensure the entire Central Belt is best served. And the key to that is improving transport _link_s between the two cities and the two airports. The Executive have already committed to rail _link_s for both airports. But for rail travel to work properly, Waverley station in Edinburgh has to be properly developed. The lines are already at full capacity and that is governed by platform capacity at Waverley. The plan to revamp the station has been delayed amid reports that the Strategic Rail Authority now has not got the £800m it needs for the full increase in the number of platforms because of its commitment to other projects. An upgraded Waverley is also needed for the Borders rail _link_, which is important to Edinburgh’s labour and housing markets. The Executive has to impress upon the SRA the impact that a properly developed Waverley will have on the entire Scottish economy, and they have to invest in Scotland’s future. One weak _link_ in the transport chain and the entire network is blighted and billions of pounds could be wasted. View my aircraft pictures: http://www.jetphotos.net/showphotos.php?userid=1753

Edinburgh airport is growing faster that Glasgow, but the overwhelming fact is that geography is on its side. A basic statement of truth... if Glasgow airport moved to Turnhouse, we could have a truly convenient/accessible Scottish gateway. Not too late for BAA to sell it's Abbottsinch site, grab the cash and concentrate on making Turnhouse a national airport for Scotland. Prestwick will 'win' the battle for the west irrespective of local politics, tribalism , 'fixes' etc; Time for commonsense to prevail, accept the inevitable and move into the 22nd. century. BAA of course must ensure it doesn't repeat the mistakes it made at Prestwick, Abbotsinch should be sold minus the runway infrastructure.
