The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) National Center for Organization Development (NCOD) offers a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Research in Organization Consulting and Development. NCOD serves VHA medical centers and offices nationwide, Its organization development services include designing and administering organizational surveys, analyzing survey data, supporting nationwide initiatives for workplace transformation, offering workplace assessments and process consultation, executive coaching, leadership and employee development, team building, strategic planning, large and small group facilitation, work redesign, psychoeducational interventions, and program evaluation services. Research conducted by NCOD seeks to integrate data obtained through these activities and relate these data to the systemically available outcome data and measurable performance aspects. In the spirit of action research philosophy, NCOD research activities are directed at two goals. 1) The first goal is feeding the obtained results back to the VHA system, in order to provide empirical data to inform its functioning. The data feedback can be directed either at the local level of the organizational system (VHA hospitals) or at the central level (VHA leadership), and usually follows information requests from particular stakeholders in the system. The NCOD research fellow will participate in managing and analyzing the data pertinent to the questions asked, summarizing the results to be user friendly and meaningful to the consumers, and presenting and interpreting the results to various stakeholders within the VHA. 2) The second goal of NCOD research is to establish best practices of healthcare management and organization development within VHA, in order to share them within the system and with broader academic and corporate audiences. This goal includes participation in the NCOD publications program. The research fellow will be actively involved in the publications program which includes managing the data available in the system, maintaining the existing data_base_s as well as creating new ones, using the data to ask questions relevant to organizational functioning of the VHA, and answering these questions through empirical research methods accepted within social-behavioral sciences. The VHA NCOD postdoctoral fellowship program in research is designed to prepare the fellow for a career in organization development research, within the VA or otherwise. Fellows may have clinical, counseling, social psychology, I/O, statistical, or other relevant background. During the 2 years of the fellowship, they will have ample opportunity to explore research-related career options within the VHA. Optionally, research fellows may also become exposed to an OD practitioner role, by engaging in some of the activities carried through by NCOD practitioners. The necessary and expected elements of the research fellowship include making active contributions to the NCOD research program, both by providing the services of addressing requests from the VHA management , and by empirically examining current operations and best practices within VHA. NCOD research fellows will learn advanced data-management and data-analytical techniques and will have opportunities applying them to large datasets of systematically collected data in VHA. The postdoctoral fellowship is build upon the _frame_work of “learning by doing.” Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in all the different research and organization development experiences that NCOD provides. In addition, each fellow has an individualized personal development plan. Fellows are evaluated formally a minimum of every six months. Evaluations are _base_d upon the core competencies identified for Consulting Psychology/Organizational Consulting Psychology, as identified by the American Psychological Association in December, 2007. The postdoctoral fellowship is an integral part of the larger NCOD organization. NCOD is divided into three equal emphasis areas: practice, research, and training. The practice arm of NCOD consists of two teams. Each team is comprised of a senior supervisor, psychologist team leader, staff psychologists, first-year fellows, and second-year fellows. Intervention teams frequently consist of a staff psychologist, first-year fellow, and second-year fellow. The research arm consists of a senior psychology supervisor, research post-doctoral fellow, and other research staff. The training division consists of the training director, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate practicum students. Multiple support staff members provide the administrative support necessary to run the organization and support training. Fellows are expected to have a strong academic background (for fellows in the research track, this includes good understanding of basic statistics), and to display a high level of professionalism in all aspects of their work. The ability to work effectively as a member of a fast-paced, high-performing team is essential, and so is the ability to accept constructive feedback and actively engage in learning new skills and new roles. Whereas fellows in the practitioner track will accrue the clinical hours necessary for licensure during their tenure in the program and will be expected to attain licensure by the end of the two-year fellowship, for fellows in the research track, accruing the hours and obtaining clinical licensure is optional. Candidates from doctoral programs in psychology are encouraged to apply. The doctoral degree must have been from an APA/CPA-accredited program or from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Applicants from clinical or counseling programs must have completed an APA/CPA-accredited internship or an internship meeting APPIC standards.
