Subject: Thesis Questionnaire A study of conversational _style_s         We are contacting you in the hope that you will participate in a study by filling out the accompanying questionnaire on conversational and disputational _style_s.  This is part of a study investigating gender and cultural differences among Chinese and Canadian students in conversational and disputational _style_s.  Interpersonal communication is essential in everyday life and people frequently become engaged in arguments over controversial issues.  Given that interpersonal relationships are created and sustained in conversation it is important to understand how people differ in their behaviors when they become involved in an argument and how they solve problems of disagreement. The research is conducted by Irene Yue, an Honours Thesis student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo working under the supervision of Dr. Al Cheyne.         All data collected will be strictly confidential.  No participants will be identified in any way in the final report. Participants may withdraw from the study at any time and that any records of the participation will be erased at once upon request.  The study has been approved by the Office of Human Research at the University of Waterloo.  If you have any concern regarding the project, please do not hesitate to contact us by returning e-mail or call Dr. Cheyne (885-1211 ext. 3054).         Please type your name and today's date under the consent letter.   Reply by returning the completed questionnaire directly to me, so that I can assure you of the confidentiality of the information. IT IS TOTALLY VOLUNTARY TO COMPLETE THE QUESTIONNAIRE, YOU MAY DISREGARD THE MAIL IF NOT INTERESTED.  The questionnaire consists of two parts: (A) Personal information and ( the actual questionnaire.  There are a total of 63 questions.  If you have any questions or comments regarding this study, please feel free to contact me.         Thank you for your co-operation.                                                 Irene YUE                                                 Department of Psychology                                                 University of Waterloo                                                 E-mail:ieyue@watarts Participants' Statement of Consent:         I understand that in completing the following questionnaire I am consenting to participate in research being conducted by Irene Yue of the Department of Psychology under the supervision of Professor Al Cheyne.  I have made this decision _base_d on the information provided above.  I understand that I may decline to answer any of the questions and that all information I provide will be held in confidence and I will not be identified in any way in any reports of the research.  I understand also that this project has been reviewed and received ethics approval through the Office of Human Research & Animal Care at the University of Waterloo and that I may contact this Office if I have any concerns or questions about my involvement in this study.
