What exactly is a prefect and a Head Boy/Girl?  I get the idea that a prefect is a student who has some authority to enforce rules and is working with the backing of the teachers.  Is this some kind of an elected position, or is it awarded by the teachers to a student they find trustworthy?  I take it it is considered an honor. Is a head boy or girl the one with the best grades?  If that's the case, is Hermione a head girl?  She is supposed to be at the top of her class. Dana

It's generally the teacher's choice of best student, overall, in terms of power or enforcing rules, they don't really do much of that, the prefects do . It's much more of an honour than anything else.

Dana I think the Head BoyGirl and Prefects tradition is dying out now...though it was still in use when I was at school. They were not always chosen from the kids with the best reports and behaviour (though that appeared to be the general practice) because sometimes I think they used it as a form of psychology...give a bad kid responsibility in the hope that hisher behaviour will benefit from it. They were chosen by the teachers with input from other prefects. I also remember them trying a nomination format one year with input from the whole school. I would never dare to try second guessing JKR but if Hermione doesn't end up as Head Girl I'll eat a Hippogriff...hooves and all!! Liz

Dana Well in my school the teachers and 5th and 6th formers (there were only 6 years of high school) got to vote for 12 people to be prefects.  The person that got the most votes was Head Prefect - kind of like head boy or girl and they had to do speeches at all the social events - halloween dance, christmas dance, end of year formal dance.  One poor kid that got elected head boy resigned because he got too nervous when giving presentations and he couldn't face doing the speeches.  The rest of the prefects got to serve coffee to teachers at the parent's evenings and to help out at the local old folks home's christmas party (yawn) and to collect the £ at the church services.  What an honour!  We didn't get to hand out punishment exercises unfortunately and if we stopped anyone to tell them not to run in the corridor we'd have probably got a fist in our faces! Just a thought - supposing Hogwarts voted in 12 prefects.  Who do you think they'd be when Harry was in 6th or 7th year?  Harry, Ron, Hermione but who else?  Do you think Neville would get in?  Or Seamus?  Or Dean?  Or Lavender?  Or Parvati?  Who do you think would get in from any other houses? Do you even think Ron would get in?  I am not so sure.  Poor ole Ron!
