I have an NT4 server that periodically loses TCPIP connectivity. Thats not such a big deal in itself, except that when this happens all SMB/Netbios traffic works fine. It seems that if we put any sort of bandwidth load onto this box, suddenly we lose all TCP socket connectivity. ie no longer can we ping, VNC or telnet to port 80. But we can still do a net view <ip addressshare and even dir <ip addrshare gives me a listing. I can use the resource kit utiliy RCMD to obtain a remote session on the box! But when within this remote session if I try and ping out I get a time out. I set the ping timeout to 10 seconds and I still get no response. Now its weird. No other protocols (like netbeui) are running. But SMB sits on netbios which sits on TCP. But when I use TCP sockets I get no response! Anybody seen this before?? If I give the server a few minutes, it usually comes back to me. The fact that SMB works means that routing is ok, tcp connections DO work and the IP address is valid. But you would think that if I cannot ping or VNC to the box, I shouldn't be able to map drives or run performance monitor against the box remotely... ideas? P
