Our North West Highland Cattle Association holds its regional show at Puyallup every year.  The Highlands are in the barns at the end of the fair.  All Highland exhibitors received a letter from the fair this past week with the following info: Dear Puyallup Fair Open Class Beef and Dairy Exhibitors, Less than a week ago we received information concerning cattle shown at the 2008 Puyallup Fair, and have since met with Dr. Leonard Eldridge, Washington State Veterinarian and his assistant, Dr. Paul Kohrs, concerning this important issue. It has been reported that 14 cattle in western Washington have died of Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF).  The incubation period ranges from 45-50 days post exposure, and the timing is similar to when they were shown at the Puyallup Fair.  It is believed that the transmission could have occurred the last five days of the Fair.  All of the animals affected to date were housed in the Dairy Barn. The letter goes on to state how they are investigating the issue, and sources of additional information.  The letter is signed by Kent Hojem, CEO of the Fair. Apparently the cattle were infected by a pen of sheep housed nearby.  MCF is caused by two different herpes viruses, one found in wildebeest as a reservoir host and the other found in sheep as the reservoir host.  The reservoir hosts are clinically unaffected by infection with the viruses but they can serve as a source of infection for clinically-susceptible animals such as cattle, deer, bison, water buffalo, and pigs which can die from the infection. MCF is not transmitted between cattle, infection must come from a reservoir host.  And apparently young lambs shed the virus more copiously than older sheep, so they are particularly dangerous to expose to cattle. The cattle that have sickened and died were all owned by FFA kids.  No Highlands have gotten sick yet, at least as far as anyone knows.  The FFA cattle were housed between the Highlands and the pen of sheep. I'm sending this info to you because the question often comes up in the Sustainable Ag class on whether cattle (particularly Highlands) are compatible with sheep.  My answer now would be an unequivocal no.  And I think Jay and I have extra worries displaying our cattle at the Kitsap Fair, especially in the exotic animal barn close by sheep.  I doubt that any vet check would show if a population of sheep carries the MCF virus.
