a man for all seasons Alan Moore: a man for all seasons...

This list was inspired by Tom DeFalco's (hopefully) facetious comment: _Sleepwalker_ is _Sandman_ done right. _Alan Moore done right._ What Where ^^^^ ^^^^^ Superman done right. Whatever Happened to The Man Of Tomorrow? Batman done right. Killing Joke, Swamp Thing #53 Captain Marvel done right. Miracleman Charlton done right. Watchmen Steve Ditko's Mr. A done right. Rorschach Golden Age pastiche done right. Watchmen's Minutemen Marvel done The Marvel Way. 1963 Marvel done right/Image done right. DOUBLE IMAGE EIGHTY PAGE GIANT (hopefully) Vertigo done right. pre-Vertigo Swamp Thing #21-64 and my own personal favorite, a composite: The Shadow crossed with Robin Hood crossed with The Scarlet Pimpernel vs. Big Brother, done right. V For Vendetta Have I missed anything? -Slippery Jim You're talking to someone for whom sanity is a conscious effort. So much has happened up here (points to forehead) that I have trouble keeping fact and fiction seperate. If I'm tired, things start to blur... If my thinking is impaired, I become a danger to EVERYONE... -Justice, _Justice #31_

Steve Ditko's Mr. A done right. Rorschach Again, we're talking two very different philosophies and characters. Rorschach is a tremendous character but he's meant to represent something entirely different from Mr. A, just as Denny O'Neil's Question was entirely different from Ditko's Question. It is unfair to compare a character of the mid-60s to a character of the mid-80s. Alan Moore is a comic book giant, but there's no reason to insult (even if unintentionally), the comic book giants of the past just to praise him. Remmember that old quote about reaching so far only because you stand on the shoulders of giants ? Abhijit

Alan Moore is a comic book giant, but there's no reason to insult (even if unintentionally), the comic book giants of the past just to praise him. Remember that old quote about seeing so far only because you stand on the shoulders of giants? Why, sure I remember. If I have seen further than others... Wait, no, it's... If I have not seen as far as others, it is because giants were standing on my shoulders. No? - then how about this one: (re: HERO proclaiming Todd McFarlane the most influential man in comics) All too often the giants of our time are only dwarfs standing on the shoulders of dwarfs. -Prof. Umberto Eco, _Name of the Rose_ Actually, Abhijit, I was trying to employ IRONY with the whole done-right thing. The fact that I dedicated my article to Tom Defalco's timeless statement Sleepwalker is Sandman done right _could_ have tipped you off. As far as done right goes, I meant done COMPETENTLY, not done definitively. (sigh) Now I have to start all over again... _Alan Moore done right_ For the Humor Impaired, the Irony-Blind, the Comedically Challenged, and the Just Plain Dead Serious. &8-| What Where ^^^^ ^^^^^ Punisher done well. Vigilante #17, 18 Captain Marvel done with profound, tragic realism, to the point where the original source material is almost unrecognizeable. Miracleman Charlton done brilliantly, with excessively grim, depressing realism. Watchmen Golden Age pastiche, done with excessively grim, depressing realism. Watchmen's Minutemen Superman done competently. Superman Annual #8 The Man Who Has Everything Batman done competently. Killing Joke, Swamp Thing #53, Batman Ann. #11 Green Lantern done competently. Green Lantern Corp stories: GL #188, GL Ann. #2,3 Green Arrow done competently. backup stories in Detective #549, 550 Early Marvel done The Marvel Way. 1963 Early Marvel done right / Image done right. (hopefully) Double Image Eighty Page Giant Vertigo done better than most real Vertigo. pre-Vertigo Swamp Thing #21-64 Thanks to Neil Polowin for helping me compile this list. It's not complete by any means, but it's only meant to demonstrate the enormous length and breadth of Alan Moore's superhero writing, to the point of having dabbled in nearly every superhero subgenre. (And unlike, say, Roy Thomas, most of it has turned out very well.) At this point, Alan Moore ought to have some sort of

Vertigo done right. pre-Vertigo Swamp Thing #21-64 =x= Wow, but ain't that the truth? There just wouldn't even be a Vertigo without Alan Moore's run on _Swamp_Thing_ (IMHO). <_Jym_ If you wear black, then kindly, irritating strangers will touch your arms consolingly and inform you that the world keeps on turning. They're right. It does. However much you beg it to stop. (55) :::.

: This list was inspired by Tom DeFalco's (hopefully) facetious comment: : _Sleepwalker_ is _Sandman_ done right. : : _Alan Moore done right._ : What Where : ^^^^ ^^^^^ : Superman done right. Whatever Happened to The Man Of Tomorrow? : Batman done right. Killing Joke, Swamp Thing #53 : Captain Marvel done right. Miracleman Personally, I like Shazam: The New Beginning because it properly captured the wonder that Billy has when he gets the ability to Shazam. It also was the first one it seems to really get the idea that Cap is Billy in an adult body without giving him a three year old mentality like JLI did. It also had some wonderful moments like when Billy uses his Cap form to get into a restricted theatre to see Uncle Dudley and uses his Shazaming to make his magic act really spectacular. But the best moment of all was when Billy ran away from Sivana and learned he couldn't find Dudley. He is at his lowest point with no home, friends or hope. Then THAT's the time when he meets Shazam and turns his life around. All in all, it seems to be Roy Thomas at his best. : Charlton done right. Watchmen : Steve Ditko's Mr. A done right. Rorschach : Golden Age pastiche done right. Watchmen's Minutemen : Marvel done The Marvel Way. 1963 : Marvel done right/Image done right.
