controversial issues YCLSA –Vodacom a haven for corruption and white collar criminals
*YCLSA –Vodacom a haven for corruption and white collar criminals * *16 February 2010* The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) is appalled by the stance taken by Vodacom shareholders in relations to a forensic audit implicating the CEO, Alan Knott Craig after two former Vodacom employees accused him of exploiting company resources for the benefit of family members. After an independent audit was done to further substantiate allegations bought upon him that he was using Vodacom resources to benefit his family, he still remains on the payroll of Vodacom. This is affirmation of the interests the private sector still serves in South Africa, although allegations were bought by the employee the report was reviewed to the discretion of shareholders. Vodacom has been entangled on a number of controversial issues including, their BEE deal, the reputation of their CEO and recently their evident resistance in supporting ICASA’s call to reduce interconnecting rates. This all unfolds all to the detriment of the working class that slave away in their lower level structures and in call centres mostly subjected to  labour broker administration . Corporate South Africa is still very much immune to the law if such allegations can purely be decided by shareholders as they don’t serve the interests of workers in their companies, but serve their profit ambitions. This also exposes the reason why most corporate South Africa is resistant to unions as such a matter should have had an independent representative for the employee.  Through job losses and the economic crises its quiet astonishing and embarrassing that the complacent former CEO continues to receive a lucrative sum of a million rand on a monthly basis   when they also employ workers on meagre salaries as labour brokers. The responsibility of creating quality and decent work lies with both government and the private sector, and Vodacom shamelessly perpetuates the divide between rich and poor. The YCL proposes that there should be a further investigation in the allegations made by the employee by the Labour department and moreover make the KPMG report public as Vodacom is just as accountable to its shareholders as it is to its customer _base_ and the public in general. We need to deal with allegations of private sector corruption in the same vigour and zeal as we would against corruption in the public sector. The allegations against the Vodacom former CEO, and the manner in which it is being dealt with, shows that corruption is all over and the private sector is not immune to it. The same sanctions on government with regards to corruption should be applicable to the private sector as their misconduct has consequences for South African corporate governance and the general public. *Issued by the YCLSA Head office  * *Contact * *Gugu Ndima (0767831516)* *National spokesperson*
