(Ryan Montieth Gill) What's the net opinion on the various big sniper rifles? Those that fall into the class of firing .50 cal or 20mm type rounds? The ones that I have heard of are: Barrett Model 80 Bipod mounted .50 cal Marty Griffin (sp?) Bipod? .50 cal (Bull pup arrangement) Latti (sp?) tripod mounted 20mm what others exist?

: What are the current issue Sniper's rifles in the US military. I have : seen pictures of a long large caliber rifle in use in the Gulf War. What : is it? The current issue sniper rifle for the U.S. Army (and USMC, I think) is the M21. This is nothing more than a specially selected M14 with semi-auto fire only, and a scope (a fixed 8x sounds right, but I'm not sure). The other available sniper rifle is the bolt action 7.62x51 whose name escapes me at the moment. I've not heard of it being used, but the M82 Barret is available to U.S. armed forces.

(A Aronson) : What are the current issue Sniper's rifles in the US military. I have : seen pictures of a long large caliber rifle in use in the Gulf War. What : is it? The issue US Army sniper rifles are the M-21 (a match-quality M-14 with telescopic sights) and its replacement the M-24 (a Remington M-700, also in 7.62x51mm). The USMC uses M700s, but may still have a few Vietnam era Winchester model 70s. In Desert Storm the US services used .50 BMG sniper weapons from almost every manufacturer and source. Most were bolt actions, which were preferred for anti-personel work. The Barretts proved to be ideal for blowing up booby traps and un-exploded ordnance (presumably with Raufoss loads). As an aside, Barrett is happy about this because the EOD market is more robust than the sniper market. Bob Lyle

The bolt action gun is the M40A1 (a modified Remington 700 turnbolt). Also EOD uses .50 cal weapons (the M-82 for ex) to detonate expolsive devices in place . =____________________________- / //// (____) R K B A _____ | ******************** (|_////__________________(_____| Giovanni Lentini RRT (/ /( )/o/)_/)_/)_/)_/)
