I was watching my DVDs of Brideshead Revisited and in episode 6, they mention that the Hotel Portmeirion stood in for the south of France.  The scenes in question seem to be scenes by a pool (but if it's the Village they added some items around the pool) and on a hotel verandah.  The latter seems to be one of the buildings on the hill overlooking the estuary.  There's a sort of overhang on an outdoor porch, and a retaining wall that has a little cannon at one point.  Does anyone recognize that de_script_ion? - Larry

The pool was used.  The latter sounds like Watch House balcony/terrace (best seen in Checkmate ).  People used to think that was where Noel Coward stayed when he wrote Blithe Spirit but I think he was actually in Gate House or thereabouts. It's about time I watched Brideshead again!

I think they were on Battery Rock which is the seaward side of the Campanile, Govt. House, Watch House and those. There are a couple of little cannons out there, which is what makes it a battery. The overhang on the outdoor porch sounds like Watch House. What does stick in my mind is that to jazz up the scenery they hung a couple of the Moravian Star lights that they borrowed from inside the rooms outside. It was all supposed to be a rich aunt's villa, wasn't it? redcat

Noel Coward was staying in either fountain or anchor when he wrote blithe sprit, but there is a photo of him sitting on the porch of watch house. gareth

Thanks, all, for your help in identifying the scenery from Brideshead.  I've been to Portmeirion twice but didn't stay on Battery Rock where I had access to those lovely verandahs! - Larry

those lovely verandahs! - Larry Yes, you'd have to stay at Watch House for the actual verandah. But I think you can share Battery Rock by staying in the cottages adjacent to it. Some likely open to the back as well as the front . rc
