Apparently according to the theravada, mahayana and vijrayana traditions, we are between the time of Siddhartha, the last Buddha, and Maitreya, the future Buddha.  The future one will teach pure dharma and acheive enlightenment incredibly fast due to past lives.  I had one zen teacher talk about this before as well as saw a cambodian theravada celebration being prepared in honor of the future buddha. This Maitreya concept has been discussed and even attempted to be incorporated by certain people of other faiths - from Muslim scholars saying this person was Muhammad, to L. Ron Hubbard the Scientology guy claiming he is the 'Matteya', to the Bahai faith.  Also, He/She may be chilling right now in a type of Meditating Heaven!  Sweet! Have a good day

According to that article, the pop-cultural image of the fat Buddha or happy Buddha is actually a chinese monk that many people regard as being Maitrey. anyway that caught my eye.
